As a result, the park and all its associated features has been included in the current Local Heritage List for South Yorkshire. Whirlow Brook House was built in 1906 by Mr and Mrs Percy Fawcett, formerly of Middlewood Hall. In 1920 Mr Fawcett's sister and husband, Mr and Mrs Walker Benton Jones moved into Whirlow Brook. Mrs Jones invited the Royal Horticultural Society to advise on the planting and planning of the grounds during the late 1920s. The gardens that were created, so typical of the time, remain largely intact. Of special interest isthe rock garden constructed in millstone grit, that merges into the existing contours. The pond in the rock garden is linked to a middle pool that links through to a lower lake. Water has been used with success to create natural effect. Corsican, Austrian and Swiss Stone Pines have been planted effectively linking groups of established plants with newer parts of the garden and generally enhance the woodland garden character. In 1946 Whirlow Brook was sold for £15,000 to the Town Trustees and the J G Graves Charitable Trust and presented to the City. The park was opened to the public on 15 June 1951 and it was the intention of the Corporation to link the estate with footpaths across neighbouring woodlands owned by the City.
