Description
A large integrated cotton spinning and weaving mill established by John Fish in 1851-2. The original buildings contained approximately 40,000 mule spindles and 600 looms worked by a 60hp beam engine. A second spinning mill, with separate engine, boiler and chimney, together with an extension to the weaving shed, was completed in 1859-60. By the 1870s, the mill housed 66,900 spindles, 924 looms, and provided employment for 1000 operatives. A new boiler house was erected in 1899, and a triple expansion vertical engine was installed in 1906 to power both spinning blocks. The mills were modernised following the Second World War, and the spinning mules were replaced with ring spindles. Spinning ceased in 1975.
