Photographing Heritage Assets

Photographs are vital when nominating a heritage asset for Local Heritage Listing. The photograph provides a snapshot of the asset at the time it was taken and evidences its condition, design, features and can be used to interpret the significance of the building.

To get the most out of these images, Historic England have provided 10 Top Tips for Architectural Photography which can be found here.

When taking photos, you should consider 3 key areas:

The context- the asset/building in its setting, including any landscaping and surrounding buildings.

The entire asset- if you are photographing a building, try to capture photographs of every exterior elevation as well as the interior, if possible.

Key features- record any decorative and significant features including any dates, inscriptions or maker's details.
