The Role of Historic Environment Records (HERs)

Historic Environment Records (HERs) are a database of all the known archaeological sites, finds, historic buildings and historic landscapes. HERs are digital databases often supported by an extensive collection of physical materials such as historic maps, aerial photographs, reports on archaeological investigations, books and journals.

Across Lincolnshire there are numerous Historic Environment Records - the largest is held by Lincolnshire County Council covering most Local Authority Districts, the two unitary authorities of North and North East Lincolnshire each maintain their own HERs.

Many of the records can be found on the Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer website, and on the Heritage Gateway.
