Building

Age

Built in the late 19th Century, and post-date the 1867 map.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Three-bay stone house which was once part of a row of houses. The central doorway has a plain stone lintel and jambs, and the original window openings have tooled voussoired lintels, similar to the earlier estate housing. The house has four rooms on each floor and a semi-sunken basement to the south end. The southern ground floor window opening was once larger, possibly indicating a former commercial shop front. On the north elevation is a tiled street sign indicating ‘Parkins Yard’. The building was badly damaged by a fire in January 2019.

Group Value

Part of a group of similar stone-fronted residential buildings in Elsecar all created around the same time.

Historic Interest

The building was once a public house called "The Royal Oak Inn", locally known as "Tommy Up Steps".
