Description

This Historic Park and Garden was identified and considered Locally Listed under the Sheffield UDP and UDP Policy BE21, which can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2022-07/03-udp-built-environment.pdf . The supporting document, which contains the schedule of identified Historic Parks & Gardens, can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/planning-and-development/sheffield-plan/Historic%20Parks%20%26%20Gardens.pdf. As a result, the park and all its associated features has been included in the current Local Heritage List for South Yorkshire. Beauchief Garden was presented to the City in 1935 by the J. G. Graves Charitable Trust, and designed by E. 0. Sadler. It is in a beautiful setting with Ladies Spring Wood and Beauchief Golf Course to the east, Ecclesall Woods to the west and adjoins the Beauchief Dam to the north, with Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet lying beyond. Despite the fact that the garden lies between Abbeydale Road South and the main railway line between Manchester and Sheffield, the garden remains a source of peace and tranquillity. The garden has altered little from the original design with stone flagged paths, the paving coming from slum housing clearance, stepways, spilling troughs, the incorporation of a stream feeding Beauchief Dam, seating areas, rockeries and lawns. Special features of note include a rustic gateway, pergola, an ornamental water garden, shelter and sundial. The layout is formal and axial and very much reflects contemporary garden style. Planting is for floral interest in all seasons and the garden is presently well maintained. This is probably the smallest and most beautiful public garden in the city. It is of importance as it reflects and is a good example of garden design style of the 1930s and illustrates the role of the public benefactor.
