Description

This Historic Park and Garden was identified and considered Locally Listed under the Sheffield UDP and UDP Policy BE21, which can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2022-07/03-udp-built-environment.pdf . The supporting document, which contains the schedule of identified Historic Parks & Gardens, can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/planning-and-development/sheffield-plan/Historic%20Parks%20%26%20Gardens.pdf. As a result, the park and all its associated features has been included in the current Local Heritage List for South Yorkshire. The first Barnes Hall, dating from the fifteenth century, was situated south of the present hall. The original gateway is all that remains of the original hall and can be seen on Elliot Lane. The present hall (Grade II Listed) was built in 1824 by a William Smith Esquire creating a large residence in a parkland setting with main prospects to the south east and south west across agricultural land. Typical features of the grounds included a ha-ha, walled garden, entrance lodge and driveway, and woodland belts. The hall formed part of a group of buildings including stable lock, home farm and outbuildings. Part of the original grounds are now built upon. The home farm is separately owned, the stable block has been converted into a dwelling and the lodge house is also in separate ownership. The setting directly around the hall remains intact with many original features remaining and the parkland character is still much in evidence. Original features include the ha-ha , entrance drive , walled garden and woodland belts.
