Historic Interest

Stanley Road was named after a major landowning family, the Stanleys. The Stanleys constructed Hoylake's first hotel (called "The Royal") in 1792 on Stanley Road. Close by, they established a racecourse on the land now occupied by the golf links of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. This property was built during the boom in building following the coming of the railways (1888 connection to Liverpool). With its natural beauty and leisure facilities, the area very quickly became a fashionable low density suburb, with the latest styles of housing for wealthy people wishing to escape the bustling and polluted urban areas of Liverpool and Birkenhead in favour of a healthier lifestyle and quality of life. During the years between 1900 and 1910 there was then a move towards an Arts and Crafts aesthetic, exemplified by this property.

Landmark Status

Very prominent position next to coast, dominating the popular Red Rocks Nature Reserve. Landmark building in Meols Drive Conservation Area Appraisal.
