Description

Former public hall at the junction of Market Street with Albert Road. There is now active food and drink frontage at ground floor on both Market Street and Albert Road and a dance studio occupies the first floor.

Age

1890s. It is on the 1898 OS map.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Red brick with terracotta detailing and gabling. A good example of a late 19th century public building.

Group Value

Creates a counterpoint to the adjacent Town Hall. Similar scale and design although of less civic grandeur.

Historic Interest

Emblematic of the golden age of Hoylake following the arrival of the direct passenger rail connection to Liverpool in 1888 and the establishment of the West Kirby and Hoylake Urban District in 1894.

Landmark Status

Key building along Market Street, the main thoroughfare through Hoylake. Helps define the gateway to the town as approached from Meols Drive.
