National Trust Record ID 50953*0 / MNA116793 Pair of cottages, c.1860, apparently purpose built but appearing on the OS map of 1897 as "Oldbank Cottage" with some division. Built of red brick in English garden wall bond with Flemish bond to the front elevation and rendered rear elevation. Single storey extension to rear and lean-to extension to N elevation. Double pile, single fronted, two storey, semi- detached. Gable roof, slate covered with stone ridge, iron gutters and downpipes, barge boards. Chimneys are in a common axial stack with blue and red machine brick oversailing. Red vented tile pots in the "Stamford" style. The windows are casement throughout, with segmental brick arches over and stone sills; the front elevation has 6-light casements with 4-panes above and one below. To the rear the windows are 2- light, 2-pane. The front doors are timber, glazed and modern. The porch to No 1 is modern gable roofed with slate cover, barge boards, windows at gables and glazed timber outer door. The porch to No 2 is single pitch, red tiled, plain close verge, glass and timber. Glazed timber outer door. Floors are tile or composition with concrete skirtings at ground floor and timber with timber skirtings at first floor. The stairways rise from the rear, are ¬ turn at foot, winders, closed string and pantry under the stair. The stair to No 1 has had its balusters removed and has a handrail on the wall. The stair to No 2 retains its original balusters or shaped, waisted planking and timber handrail. Fireplaces in bedrooms are small, cast iron and with decoration. The extension to the rear is single storey with cross wing and gable roof with "Stamford" design dressings. Stretcher bond brick and Crittall 6-pane windows (c.1930). Original use as a wash house and WC, now used as a kitchen and bathroom.
