Woodhouse Farm

Location/Address

Woodhouse Lane, Sale, Trafford, M33 4LR

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

Group of historic farm buildings thought to date from circa 1840, now sitting incongruously amongst 20th century housing. There are four detached properties in authentic farmhouse style, which should be considered together for group value. One of the properties is illustrated here (https://media.onthemarket.com/properties/4033762/481580181/document-0.pdf) illustrating clearly the historic character. I don't know the source of the 1840 date in that document, but two of the farm buildings are visible on the OS six-inch 1888-1913 series map, see https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=53.41103&lon=-2.35818&layers=6&right=BingHyb

Statement of Significance

Age

Circa 1840? The building appears to be depicted on the Ashton-upon-Mersey tithe map of 1841, with the accompanying schedule identifying the property as a 'homestead and garden, occupied by William Brooks.

Group Value

Group of four historic farm buildings now sitting in a suburban setting, an unusual survival in this context.

Historic Interest

Rare survival from the pre-suburban development of Sale in the early/mid-20th century.
