Description

The Hadfield Street Works (Bolt & Nut) is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 1:500 Town Plan of 1895, and shown in a slightly enlarged form as an engineering works on the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map of 1908. The works had taken a C-shaped plan by that date, with three adjoining ranges around a small, central yard that was accessed from Smith Street. This layout persisted until at least the mid-20th century, although just the front range along Hadfield Street survives extant in the modern townscape. This two-storey range (plus basement) comprises two components, with the southern four bays forming a slightly wider footprint (extending closer to the Hadfield Street frontage) to the northern eight bays. The southern part is of brick construction with stone string courses at each floor level, which also form sills to the windows at first and second floor; the stone string course also forms the window lintels at second-floor level. The windows at first-floor level all have arched brick lintels. The main entrance is set in the fourth bay, and is flanked by two brick-built pilasters, with a third pilaster forming the south-western corner of the building. The northern eight bays of the building employ the same architectural characteristics, with doors occupying the fifth and seventh bays affording access from Hadfield Street; the door set into the fifth bay is flanked by brick pilasters. A basement level external passage along the front of this part of the building required bridging to gain access to the doors. The window on the second floor of the eighth bay has been remodelled, and may have been a loading door originally, although there is no visible sign of a former hoist. A cast-iron plate bearing the name 'Hadfield Street' affixed to the exterior wall of the first bay is probably original, and contributes to the historic character of the building.
