Description

Landmark building within the Downs Conservation Area, located at the south end of Railway Street at the fork of The Downs and Ashley Road. Developed between 1876 and 1897 Portland stone facade at ground (shopfront) level, painted. Upper storeys in cream brick with red-brick detailing in horizontal bands and in arched lintels with stone keystones over rounded-arch windows. Red-brick corbels at eaves-level flanking stone detailing and stone borders of dormers facing in three directions from steep-graded slate roof. Ornate clock at first-floor level (Roman numerals around 5-point star) with underslung stone-carved garland. Clock located beneath a decorative 2-light balcony and above the ornate portland stone-carved entrance.
