Description
The architecturally impressive building is first listed in the street register in Slater's Directory for 1898, and is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 1:2500 map of 1908 occupying a vacant plot immediately to the south of the Manchester Carriage & Tramway Co depot that was built in 1872. Collins and Stratton (1993, 91) consider it to have been part of the horse-tram depot but was used from 1906 for the production of Bell motor cars, and that it was later used by the Co-operative Wholesale Society for the manufacture of cars, delivery vans and charabancs. However, it is uncertain what information this is based upon, as trade directories up to at least 1912 identify the occupants as William Wood & Sons, proprietors of the Carriage Co Ltd, and analysis of historic mapping suggests it to have been separate to the Manchester Carriage & Tramway Co’s premises (which was taken over subsequently by CWS and is identified as ‘Motor Works’ on the 2nd Revision 1:2500 map of 1922). A trade directory for 1920 lists the building as the premises jointly as an electrical works and a manufacturing chemist.
