196 Hale Road

Location/Address

196 Hale Road, Hale, Altrincham

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

A villa-type residence that was built between 1876 and 1898, based on map evidence, and is likely to have been associated originally with Hale Cemetery (opened 13 December 1894), within which the building lies. Whilst the Ordnance Survey 1st Revision 1:2500 map of 1898 shows the large house to have been enclosed by a boundary wall, rather than open to the cemetery, several paths lead from the house into the cemetery, implying a functional relationship. The footprint of the current building is the same as that depicted on the sequence of historic mapping, although a small extension has been added to the south-west corner of the original building. It comprises a three-storey structure of brick construction with mock-Tudor detailing on the front and rear elevations.
