Description

The Imperial Picture Theatre opened in 1914 with seating for 750 patrons in the stalls only. It was designed by the Manchester-based architect William Henry Matley, and had a stage, five feet deep, and two dressing rooms. There was also a cafe. Building first shown on the Ordnance Survey 2nd Revision 1:2500 map, upon which it is identified as a 'Picture Theatre'. Around 1929 it was equipped with a Western Electric (WE) sound system. The Imperial Picture Theatre closed on 15th January 1976, and the building was converted subsequently into a timber merchants.
