Description

National Trust Record ID 50898 / MNA117551 Dwelling house of c.1880 with attached barn. Brick built in English garden wall bond with red machine brick quoins and dressings to the front elevation. Double pile, two storey, with kitchen and scullery in extension to rear. Gable roof, slate covered with barge boards, grey ridge tiles, iron gutter and downpipes. Cat-slide roof to rear over outshut. Alterations to brickwork in south gable would suggest that this is later than rest of building. Chimneys are inside at gable with red machine brick oversailing and red vented pots. Windows are 2-light, 2-pane sashes with horns to the front elevation with stone sills and segmental brick arches over. Elsewhere the windows are 2 or 3-light, 2-pane casements with timber sills and segmental brick arches over. Oriel or projecting window to south elevation with lead flashings and decorative brackets to protruding timber sill. Front door is timber with fielded panel below 2 lights above. Porch is timber, cantilevered, on plain brackets; slate covered gable roof with decorative, red ridge tiles and "ball & dart" finial. Internally, the doors are battened with moulded architraves. Ground floor is wood block with concrete skirtings. Exposed joists and braces to timber first floor above. Six inch timber skirtings. Stair is « turn, timber winders with closed string, low handrail and straight balusters. Cellar under stair down two steps with window. Kitchen under second slate covered, single pitch roofed addition to rear. Range Built up against the N end of the house is a range of English garden wall bond brick with red machine brick dressings. The roof is at a lower height to that of the house and is gable, slate covered with a cat-slide to the rear housing a root store and containing a trough, pump and tap, and having a horizontal sliding 3-light, 2-pane casement window. Internally is a shippon of four bays and a trough reached through the root store door. The remainder of this barn is stabling with a manger and trough by a heavy battened door. Brick and stone floor, loft over and red machine brick dressings to a pitching eye. Earlier heck door with old hinges. Outhouse At a distance to the house, but within the garden wall, is an outhouse containing a wash house and an old earth closet. a copper and old mangle remain in situ. Single pitch slate roof with stone parapet and English garden wall bond brick walls. Iron gate to garden path. Identified as a 'positive contributor' to the Dunham Town Conservation Area.
