High Street United Free Methodist Chapel & Sunday School

Location/Address

High Street, West of St Austell

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

United Free Methodist Chapel plus attached Sunday school. Chapel is stucco with stucco detail; Sunday School is local rubble with granite dressings; dry slate roofs. Simple Classical style with round-arched openings. (HER No. 27094). This is the Primitive Methodist Chapel at High Street (St Austell), marked on early maps (1881), becoming a Free United Methodist Church by 1907, and labelled simply as Methodist Church by 1932. It was disused by the time of the 2nd world war when American troops camped nearby and is referenced in the BBC War Stories collection. Planning permission was sought in 2004 to change use and this was approved to one bedroom holiday letting unit and home office. But this does not appear to have progressed much (as of 2019). https://www.myprimitivemethodists.org.uk/content/chapels/cornwall/st-austell-high-street-primitive-methodist-chapel Nominated for inclusion in the CLHL by Sylvia Batchelor of Whitemoor.
