Description

An inclined plane (HER No. 178596) which formed the southern end of the Treffry horse-drawn tramway of 1849 from Newquay to Hendra Crazey clayworks. Part of the Treffry Tramway system of 1849, this section of the line was abandoned following the construction of the Cornwall Minerals Railway of 1874. The horse-drawn tramway was part of a system conceived by JT Treffry of Fowey as Cornwall’s first trans-peninsular route, intended to avoid the treacherous sea voyage around Land's End for goods shipped from South Wales. The principal traffic was granite, china-clay, coal and lime. Recommended by local Cornwall councillor, Dick Cole, for inclusion in the CLHL and as a potential candidate for statutory protection.
