Description

A china clay pan-kiln (HER No. 19941) for Goonamarris china clay works, first recorded on the OS 2nd Edition 1:2500, visited by CAU in 1990, when extant remains of a pan kiln, stack and tank were noted. Now unroofed and very overgrown, the kiln is of granite rubble masonry with a granite and brick chimney stack which survives to full height. The pan is narrow at 3.0m, with a travelling bridge still in situ. Granite settling tanks of conventional form were fed by a series of sub-oval settling pits to the rear. The furnace room still has its fire-doors intact. The site was re-assessed by CAU in 1999 as part of the Goverseth ROMP. The pan kiln is visible on aerial photographs and has been plotted as part of the NMP. Recommended by local Cornwall councillor, Dick Cole, for inclusion in the CLHL and as a potential candidate for statutory protection.
