Description

A sky-tip at Gothers China Clay Works (HER No. MCO55755). Recommended by local Cornwall councillor, Dick Cole, for inclusion in the CLHL and as a potential candidate for statutory protection.

There are now very few survivors of this once ubiquitous type of landscape feature.

Group Value

Part of a group including Wheal Frederick and St Dennis Consols. The complex contains dumps, pits, two engine houses, settling pits and two early pan-kilns.

Historic Interest

Sky tips became an iconic point of reference in the Cornish landscape and cultural heritage, affectionately referred to as ‘the Cornish Alps’, mentioned in tourist guide books and adopted as emblems by local communities.

Landmark Status

A distinctive feature, very visible within the surrounding landscape. Local Landmark visible as a backdrop to Whitemoor and from Trelavour Downs.
