Description

A sky-tip at Gunheath China Clay Works (HER No. MCO55754). The last surviving component of the old Gunheath works, with little surrounding context. A large solitary sky-tip, now the last surviving component of the old Gunheath works. An important feature in the Vale Pleasant landscape. Recommended by local Cornwall councillor, Dick Cole, for inclusion in the CLHL and as a potential candidate for statutory protection.

There are now very few survivors of this once ubiquitous type of landscape feature.

Group Value

Although nothing else survives of the china clay works of which it was once a part, as a surviving sky tip it has group value in terms of the wider china clay area.

Historic Interest

Sky tips became an iconic point of reference in the Cornish landscape and cultural heritage, affectionately referred to as ‘the Cornish Alps’, mentioned in tourist guide books and adopted as emblems by local communities.

Landmark Status

A distinctive feature, very visible within the surrounding landscape.
