Description

National Trust Record ID 51023*0 / MNA118061 Purpose-built row of four cottages, c.1850, later adapted to make two dwellings. Built of red brick in English garden wall bond. Double pile, two storey. Gable roof, slate covered with barge boards, red ridge tiles, iron gutters and downpipes. Chimneys are axial but gable inside for the lh cottage. Blue brick oversailing and plain or vented red tile pots. The windows to the front elevation are 3-light, 2-pane with 2- brick segmental arch over at ground floor only; timber infills and stone sills. At the rear the windows are modern 2-light, 6- pane casements and 2-light, 2-pane casements to the gable ends. The doors to the middle two cottages have been bricked up, as has the back door to No 4. The staircases are timber, straight, enclosed with closed string and doors and winders at foot, ¬ turn. Up one step all around to bedrooms. No 1 Four Cottages (114) The front door is « glazed with a fixed 12-pane light set in a battened timber door. The back door is panelled timber with stained glass roundel. Two French windows to rear, each covered by brick based, glazed timber extension. Internally, the doors are old battened timber at first floor and glazed modern or boarded over at ground floor with moulded architraves. The floors are concrete at ground floor with timber or concrete skirtings. Timber first floor with purlins visible in rear extension. Glazed and boarded partition at stair head. No 2 Four Cottages (116) Framed batted timber front door and glazed back door. Internally, the doors are battened timber with plain modern architraves. The floor are concrete, tile covered at ground floor and timber at first floor with moulded, timber skirtings. The adaptation to stair/WC of No 3 leaves removable boards for furniture removal.
