Description

Mission Hall is a two storey building with single storey side extension. Constructed from hard red brick with sandstone dressings and slate roof. Central doorway with hoodmould flanked by slim 3-light windows with stone dressings, stepped tripartite window to first floor with continuous hoodmould and dated 1908, and stone sill band. Stone band to gable inscribed ‘PRIMITIVE METHODIST MISSION HALL’. Some original coloured glass. Modern ramped access slope. Coped boundary wall and stone gate piers with Gothic caps to Mission Hall section. Main Gothic-style church constructed in 1935 to accommodate growing congregation. Tall two storey building with basement, which was originally the new school room, constructed from hard red brick with buff terracotta dressings and slate roof. Coloured leaded lights to all windows. North elevation is symmetrical in 3 bays with central gabled bay flanked by two storey flat roofed bays with single windows to each storey and simple Gothic-style coping to parapets. Large central traceried window above Tudor style arched doorway flanked by pairs of slim leaded windows. Ground floor breaks forward with coping and shallow pilasters either side of doorway with simple terracotta capitals. Pilasters running from above doorway to roof separating bays on north elevation. Steps to door behind coped red brick wall. Five bays to west elevation, first bay breaks forward to create square corner tower and fourth bay breaks forward with a coped gable. Ground level slopes away to expose top half of basement windows, although most are covered over. Fifth bay set back with steeply pitched roof and two dormers above box bay; stone steps to door to left of box bay. Large coloured leaded windows to second, third and fourth bays with arched heads, corner tower has coloured leaded window to first floor and 3-light mullioned window to ground floor. Dwarf wall topped with iron railings around exposed basement section. Whole site set behind low brick boundary wall with iron gates to corner and in front of steps on west elevation. Polycarbonate window guards applied to all windows. Interior: Gallery with original seating up stairs to left from main entrance which has a tiled floor. The partition wall between the entrance door and the main worship space has a central 3-light coloured leaded window flanked by double entrance doors with coloured leaded lights and above door lights. Original parquet floor to main worship space and timber boarded ceiling.

Statement of Significance

Age

Primitive Methodist Mission Hall and Sunday School on Lune Grove constructed in 1908 which was the first phase in the development of this prominent corner site. The larger church was opened in 1935.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Main Gothic style church designed by architects Messrs JH Andrews and Butterworth of Manchester, main contractor James Seddon of Blackpool.
