Statement of Significance

Age

Current building dates to 1932, although a hostelry has occupied the site since the 18th century.

Historic Interest

A regular at the old Unicorn Inn was Samuel Brooks, calico printer and banker, whose country residence (Prospect House) was half a mile up the road from here and who was one of the richest men in the North West in the 1850s.

Archaeological Interest

The original 18th-century pub was situated in front of the current building, and its foundations may survive beneath the modern car park. The new building was erected whilst the original was still in use to avoid losing the license, which had to operate continuously closure.
