Description

Single storey library constructed from red brick and artificial stone. Smaller than other Robinson branch libraries of the same date due to the constraints of the site, it abuts a terrace to the east and the main elevation faces west at right angles to Highfield Road with gardens to the front. East side elevation is symmetrical in five bays. Single red brick bays to either side of three central bays constructed from stone with three single windows. HIGHFIELD BRANCH LIBRARY carved into stone above. Bay to far right has a secondary modern entrance. Main west elevation is dominated by a full height artificial stone porch with classical details. Deep stone parapet to roof. More recent single storey extension to north side set at right angles to the main building. Site is behind coped red brick wall with piers from the first library on site, now with modern railings. Datestone July 1915 set in the wall. Gate piers to site entrance appear to be contemporary with the rebuild. Grundy Recreation Grounds remain at the rear and are accessed through the Highfield Road Library gardens, but re-named Highfield Road Recreation Ground by 1964. The library is now a community centre.
