Location/Address

Barrow Lane, Hale WA15 0DL

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

The building probably dates to 1899, and is referenced in 1901. A good example of a late Victorian villa. It was designed by the eminent architect FB Dunkerley for himself. The building is in the ‘black and white’ style favoured by Dunkerley's former employer, John Douglas of Chester. It originally consisted of three bedrooms, dressing room, study, day & night nurseries, servants' quarters, and, in a connected building forming the arched entrance, stables and a coach-house. The interiors featured stencilled friezes from the workshop of George Wragge of Salford, and there were substantial gardens. The building makes a positive contribution to the historic character of the South Hale Conservation Area.
