Description

Ashton-upon-Mersey Friends Burial Ground is a Quaker cemetery in Ashton-upon-Mersey. The Meeting House was built in 1856, and said to have been used originally only for meetings for worship in connection with the walled burial ground. It's not therefore clear whether 1856 was the year burials there began, or whether the burial ground was older than the Meeting House. In 1876, Jacksons Row Friends' Burial Ground in Manchester was closed and all the human remains in it were transferred to Ashton-upon-Mersey Burial Ground. The family of George Bradshaw, who developed the first railway timetable, is interred in the burial ground.
