Description

Art Deco style. Steel frame, brickwork clad in off-white faience with panels of brown faience, all supplied by Shaws of Darwen. The building is of five storeys with an entrance splayed to the Promenade and Adelaide Street West where there is a tall blocky flat-topped clock tower with a ripple frieze. The building is articulated by strong verticals which continue as the building curves around to the rear on Bank Hey Street. The store replaced the Royal Hotel public house and is a local landmark and significant example of interwar retail architecture.

When built this was the company’s flagship store and the largest Woolworth’s of its day, which claimed to have the largest self-service cafeteria in the country.
