Description

Substantial late Victorian public house built to replace an historic inn of the same name. Two storeys plus attic storey constructed from red brick with steeply pitched Westmorland slate roof with red terracotta ridge cresting. Some original joinery. Main elevation canted across the corner in 4 bays. Gabled third bay with canted bay window with brick mullions to ground floor and timber box bay above with single pitched roof. Modern signage between upper and lower floors and window to attic storey in half timbered gable. Entrance in second bay through shallow gabled porch with red tiled roof and a single window above to first floor. Single windows to ground and first floor of first bay. Fourth bay has arched window head to ground floor with terracotta hoodmould and large keystone. First floor window above is directly under the eaves. Dormer windows at each end of the roof of the main elevation. Elevation to St. Anne’s Road in two bays. First bay identical to third bay of main elevation. Single window to ground and first floor of second bay. Secondary entrance to side north elevation through gabled porch off car park. Substantial red brick chimney stacks adjacent to each of the gabled bays. More recent single storey extensions to rear and south elevation.

Archaeological Interest

The original inn was in existence in early 19th century, giving the site archaeological potential.
