Description

Five storey building erected by the railway companies for the accommodation of drivers and guards who had to stay overnight in Blackpool. There were fifty cubicles, reading-room, dining-room, bathrooms and kitchens. The shop units on the ground floor are probably original to the design and are still in use. Attic storey appears to be mid to late 20th century and the whole building is now in use as flats. Constructed from hard dark red brick and red terracotta, the upper floors are divided into 15 bays, and the building has a powerful utilitarian appearance with minimal decoration which dominates the townscape. Terracotta blocks to window heads; shallow cills with stops. Modern replacement windows in original openings. Corner brick pilasters with square brick capitals and banding, shallow pilasters divide the main elevation vertically. Brick cornice to flat roof now beneath attic storey clad in slate. Ground floor shop units have some original shop fronts. The building is of high local significance because it is the only remaining structure associated with Central Railway Station, now demolished.
