Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

Single storey built from Accrington brick with stone dressings, it was designed on the central hall principle with surrounding classrooms at ground level, and staff and dining rooms at first floor level within the roof space. Stone inscriptions show separate entrances for boys and girls. Outbuildings providing shelter and toilet accommodation for boys and girls remain and are relatively intact with slim cast iron columns with ionic capitals. The hall has an exposed mock hammerbeam roof with carved rails, and two stained glass memorial windows were added in 1919. More recent extensions of various dates.

Historic Interest

Edwardian school built to meet the needs of a growing population in the area.

Archaeological Interest

Despite later additions the school retains many original features and makes a strong contribution to the townscape.
