Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

Constructed for the Magee Marshall brewery and taking its name from an earlier inn on the site. Two-storeys with attic in a partial mock-Tudor style using red brick with painted stone dressings beneath an assortment of pitched slate and flat roofs, architect unknown. Front elevation has two non-matching front doors with that to the left having a terracotta panel depicting the livery of Magee Marshall brewery above. Some windows on the ground floor retain original etched glass to the leaded windows. Brick chimney stacks are predominantly tall throughout the building and original cast iron rainwater goods are present. Internally the Waterloo Hotel retains some good quality fittings on the ground floor including some stained glass and etched windows, some floor and wall tiles, some decorative ceilings and a timber staircase. However, there has been a degree of alteration to the original layout of the public area that includes replacement of the original bar and removal of some walls to create a more open plan ambience. There is a former stable block to the west of the hotel while to the rear there is an attached crown green bowling green with later spectator stands. The associated former stable displays elements of mock-Tudor styling to complement the main elevations of the hotel. High brick boundary wall to bowling green topped with decorative ironwork.
