Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

A complete example of a bank on a prominent shopping street, which was extended and altered in the 1920s to cater for the ever-expanding tourist trade. Formerly Union Bank, now in use by Barclay’s Bank. A newspaper article from this date describes how the ‘present granite front’ was extended by 20 feet and an extra storey added. Minimally Baroque in style, white Yorkshire stone to the upper storeys. Symmetrical, 4 storeys, 7 bays wide, with pedimented bowed central bay to the first and second floors, and balustrade parapet. The ground floor is faced in red-granite with a central arched doorway. Replacement casements and modern signage but otherwise intact. The building is built up to the back of the footway and is in sharp contrast to a neighbouring Brutalist bank.
