Description

This building currently in use as a sports bar, presently known as 'The Cotton Mill on Flixton' has an original art deco style frontage, making it an interesting example on Flixton Road. Built during the 1930s to a design by the notable architect Percy Howard, the building at one time this housed the Gas Showrooms selling gas appliances to the public. The building reflects the growing confidence of the area as a popular and wealthy suburb of Manchester, and as a place which offered a range of modern facilities catering for the needs of the area's families.

Historic Interest

This building currently in use as a sports bar has an original art deco style frontage, making it an interesting example on Flixton Road. Built during the 1930’s, at one time this housed the Gas Showrooms selling gas appliances to the public. Prior to moving to this location the gas showrooms had been based on nearby Crofts Bank Road. Later in its life the building was converted into a steakhouse/grill restaurant called ‘The Britannia’, run by Whitegate Taverns Ltd, which was very popular in its time. After its closure as a restaurant the building has gone through a number of identity changes as a pub/nightspot/sports bar - bearing the names, 'TFI Mambos', 'Juicy'; 'Ivory' and 'Champs Sports Bar & Grill'. The bar was renamed 'The Cotton on Flixton in 2021. Many local people who are members of the Urmston and District Local History Society Facebook Group indicated that this building had special meaning for them - and felt that this should be Listed Locally. This was due to its striking appearance, and the fond memories they have of spending time there, particularly during its time as Whitegate taverns steakhouse restaurant -'The Britannia'
