At rear - further large single-storey extension in later 20th century. Interior - Ornamental wooden fireplace surround, but may be a more recent addition. Bowling green was in use until recent years, for crown green bowls matches. Site of farm from at least 1700 onwards. Building probably replaced c.1800. Shown on 1838 tithe map, with carthouse, barn, stable & shippon. A separate building - single storey, which was at one time a separate restaurant 'Le Bon Viveur', may be on the site of a barn. One of the two early pubs in Timperley. Used as a meeting place for town's meetings. Local Prize Band practised there in early 20th century.

Statement of Significance

Asset type

Originally a farmhouse. Certainly known as "Gouldens of the Mossend" 1767, farm may be even earlier as Goulden family had lived in Timperley since c.1620. William Goulden was a weaver and the house included a loom-house, parlour, pump, and kitchen garden. Probably became a public house in the 19th century. During the 1830s the landlord was John Chorlton. A Dutch barn on the site was used as a stables and was put to other uses. The "Hare & Hounds": 2-storey building, 3 bays with portico entrance and stone pilasters. Gabled. Stone plinth and brick walling (1). Shown on Enclosure Map 1801 (2). Bryant's (3) & 1876 OS (4). Wills exist for "Richard Goulden, 1767, yeoman, W/E Supra" and "Thomas Goulden, yeoman, 1777 W/E Infra" (CRO Wills & Inventories). Largely renovated. Rendered. Slate roof. (AM 1994)
