Description

A late Victorian / early Edwardian Wesleyan church that was established in the initial phase of the development of Gorse Hill as a residential suburb. The fabric of the single-storey building is primarily of brick with stone detailing.

Age

The church is first shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st Revision 1:2500 map of 1908, occupying a site that is depicted as undeveloped fields on the First Edition 1:2500 map of 1889. The building is identified as a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on the 1908 map, but is shown to have extended just 15.8m along the Portland Street frontage. The 2nd Revision 1:2500 map of 1922 identifies the building as a Wesleyan Church, and shows it to have been extended towards the Chester Road frontage with an increased length of 26.9m. A Sunday School is shown to have been added to the north-western end of the church on the Ordnance Survey 1:1250 map of 1955, although this has since been demolished.

The church has a group value with the Gorse Hill County Primary School.

Historic Interest

The church formed part of the initial wave of large-scale development of Gorse Hill during the late Victorian / early Edwardian period.

Landmark Status

The church makes a positive contribution to the historic character of the Chester Road corridor. It is also an important community asset, acting as a ‘one-stop-shop’ community hub.
