Description

A former Methodist church now flats and a training centre for young people. Expressionist design in hard red brick and white terracotta bands with rusticated brick to the ground floor. Liturgical west end (facing north) has a classical-style central entrance door framed in white terracotta, and stepped, narrow west window. Slender square tower at north-west corner with fins between the bell openings. Singleton Street elevation has four-bay set-back clerestory with narrow stepped window, above ground floor ‘aisle’ to street with horizontal windows. Three-storey, 4-bay vestry block to the south end has recessed windows and a classical-style doorway. Parapets conceal the roof. All the windows are uPVC and those to the ground floor have steel grilles. The main entrance has a late 20th-century brick ramp. It was converted into flats in 1996, as recorded on a stone next to the entrance.

Historic Interest

Historic mapping shows that there was a Primitive Methodist Church and Sunday School on the site from at least the 1870s, and the chapel is listed in the 1879 Slater’s Directory. Chapel Street was named for the historic chapel on the site.
