Description

National Trust Record ID 51069*0 / MNA115059 Purpose-built row of four cottages at Sinderland Green dated to 1915 to supply the need for cottages for the use of labourers and farm servants employed on the Cheshire Estates following the condemnation by the Local Authority of certain existing cottages. Identical design to New Cottages, Little Bollington. Brick built in English garden wall bond with plain stretcher bond to the front elevation. Differing levels of eaves makes Nos 1 & 4 two-storey and Nos 2 & 3 one and a half storey. The first floor of Nos 2 & 3 jetty out over the ground floor and is supported by a bresummer resting on exposed joists. A brick string course runs around the entire building between the ground and first floors. Gable roof, red tile and ridge with over hang at gable. Additional small gablets with single infill on the front elevation above the first floor windows. Iron gutters and down pipes. Chimneys are axial without decoration and have plain red pots. The windows are 1, 2 or 3-light, 8-pane casements, those on ground floor with segmental brick arches over. Flat roofed dormers over first floor windows of Nos 2 & 3 to front, cat-slide roof over to rear. The doors are battened within and stout, framed, stained front and back doors. The timber canopy to Nos 2 & 3 provides a porch. The floors are concrete with tile in kitchen at ground floor, timber at first floor. Ground floor rooms have exposed joists. Three rooms extend into the roof space. Narrow timber skirtings. Staircase to No 1 & 4 is located in the corner of each cottage. Timber with winders, closed string, straight timber balusters, handrail and newel. Nos 2 & 3 have new timber, straight stair with winders at foot, enclosed, closed string and balusters and newel at landing level. Pantry under stair. No 1 has been thoroughly modernised with a bathroom inserted in the old pantry downstairs, copper removed. Decorative cast iron grate remains in situ in the corner of the bedroom above. The other cottages have been modernised and partition walls at first floor of No 4 are altered, resited or removed.
