Location/Address

Manchester Road, Altrincham

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

A two-storey public house with an L-shaped plan dating to the late 18th century, with an early 20th-century three-storey extension to the north and a late 20th-century hotel block (of no special interest) located to the east. The main facade overlooking Manchester Road has a dentilled gable with entrance portico and a two-storey wing running off to the east. This elevation features bay windows to the ground floor and shuttered first-floor windows. Dormer windows have been added to the roof during the 20th century, together with a one-bay gabled extension at the south end that was erected during the period 1910-35. The main sections of the pub are rendered. The building is a positive contributor to the Sandiway Conservation Area as it is a substantial focal point and has historic interest for its role as a coaching house. The current decorative condition and modern signage are intrusive to the building.

Statement of Significance

Age

The George and Dragon was built in the 18th century as a coaching inn.

Group Value

The building has a group value with The Wheatsheaf on the opposite side of Manchester Road, and the houses immediately to the north and east that have good-quality late Georgian and early Victorian designs.

Historic Interest

The George and Dragon was established in the 18th century as an important coach staging post on the main route between Manchester and Chester. and, together with The Wheatsheaf on the opposite side of Manchester Road, became a focus for the development of the locale during the second half of the 19th century. The Ordnance Survey 1st Edition map of 1878 shows several outbuildings, which presumably included stables, situated to the rear and south of the main building; these outbuildings have since been demolished.
