Gardeners' Store and Shelters
Location/Address
Longford Park, Stretford
Type
Description
A small modern building refurbished in an Art Deco style to complement the adjacent shelters and reflect the style of a café that formerly occupied this site. It is used as a gardeners’ store. The single-storey building has a stepped frontage topped with a key stone. Pavilions to either side, set against a red brick wall, also feature a stepped design, rising to the centre. These were formerly roofed to provide shade and shelter for park users but their poor condition in recent years meant the removal of the roofs and creation of planting beds beyond the retained frontages.
Included as an interesting example of an Art Deco feature, contrasting with the Victorian and Edwardian estate buildings. The shelters represent the early 20th-century phase of the site in its heyday as a public park, with the gardeners’ store a sympathetic refurbishment in the same style.
