Description
Zion Sabbath School and the nearby graveyard on Zion Lane are the last surviving remnants of the Zion Chapel complex. The Sabbath School building occupies the site of the original temporary chapel that was built in 1793 before the permanent chapel building was constructed on the opposite side of Zion Lane, in 1805. The present building is thought to date from 1854 and it is almost certain that Sheffield Anti Slavery activist Mary Anne Rawson, who is buried in the Zion graveyard, would have been involved in the Sabbath School in one way or another.
The building is currently in use as a car auto electrician. While many of the fixtures and fittings have been removed, the building still stands as a monument to the vital community hub that once occupied the site.
As Sheffield City Council's redevelopment plan for Attercliffe is implemented (as part of the Government's Levelling Up agenda), recognising Zion Sabbath School and creating a new local community facility here would bring it back to the purpose it was built for.
