Description

Former cinema constructed from Accrington brick with stone dressings, now painted. The main corner elevations comprise symmetrical three storey corner tower with ornamental red tiled hexagonal dome with finial and timber eaves bracket, flanked by three-storey single-bay sections with pitched roofs and stone copings. Stone string courses and moulded continuous stone hoodmoulds tie the three elements together. The windows have modern inserts in the original openings. The Dickson Road elevation has a pitched slate roof, and modern windows have been inserted in the rendered panels at first floor level. The original steel and glass canopy to the entrance and along the side has been removed.

After a fire, the cinema was totally refurbished by Messrs. Derham, Mackeith and Partners, prominent local architects.

Historic Interest

Described as Blackpool’s cosiest cinema seating 731 people when it opened. Originally named Empire Imperial Pictures, the building had a severe fire in 1939 which destroyed the interior. Cinema closed in 1961 and in a variety of uses since then.
