Statement of Significance

Asset type

Purpose built church, serving Amersham Common & Little Chalfont. Church of England. Previously, area was served by a ‘mission church’ of St. Marys’s at Old Amersham, however with the growth of the area, a new Church was provided.

Age

Construction began in 1935 & was completed - as far as possible, due to financial limitations, in 1936.

Rarity

Unusual design itself, with something of an Italian/ Mediterranean influence/ feel to the style. Only known example of a building in this area, by Geoffrey Lucas.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Interesting Church design between the Wars, by recognised architect Geoffrey Lucas. Originating from Hertfordshire, he engaged with the ideals of the Garden Suburb Movement & made notable architectural contributions to some of the key Suburb/Towns of the period. He also practiced ecclesiastical architecture. St. George’s Church is one of his last recorded works & unlike his other churches, is unlisted. The facade itself is very dramatic feature within the street-scene of White Lion Road.

Group Value

Diagonally across from Bendrose Lodge, which leads to Bendrose Farm & Bendrose Grange (see separate listings).

Historic Interest

Has served the Parish since the creation & replaced the previous - more temporary - set up, of the Mission Church. Good example of the work of architect Geoffrey Lucas.

Landmark Status

Very visible in the street-scene of White Lion Road, which is a busy main road between Amersham & Little Chalfont - which also leads to further larger road, including the M25 - in both directions. The tower to the front of the building, is especially prominent.
