Description

The Red House Lock, or Lock 13 of the Aylesbury Canal is one of the locks along the canal with some of the oldest remaining dated material. The plaque on the side of the lock closest to the associated bridge dates part of the canal to 1858, only 44 years following the opening of the canal in 1814. There is clear rebuilding work that has been done on sides of the lock and on the associated bridge. The location of the lock next to the Red House is noteworthy as the Red House itself is a listed building, dating to the early 1700s.

Statement of Significance

Asset type

Despite their importance in British history the locks of canals have been somewhat ignored. The preservation of these canal locks in some of their original form is important in maintaining some knowledge on their use in their original context.

Age

The Lock itself is at least 164 years old as a lowest estimate. This is combined with the fact that it is only 44 years older (at a maximum) than the canal itself.

Group Value

As one of the 16 locks along this 200 year old canal, these locks have importance as a group, especially this lock due to its available dating.

Landmark Status

Although this lock stands next to the Red House. The two locations have become more entwined with each other in terms of their relationship, this is part of the reason behind the name "Red House Lock". Thus it could be argued that the Red House and Red House Lock could now be considered as a group.
