Statement of Significance

Asset type

Arts and Crafts design residential building

Age

Early 20th century (mid 1910s?)

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Nice Arts and Crafts example, probably the work of Kemp & How. Two storey red brick house, tile roof with eaves dormer windows and central 3 pot chimney. Minor modifications under planning application CH/2001/0070/FA and more significant extension under application CH/2016/2019/FA which do not significantly detract from the original house. Thought to be designed by Kemp & How architects, who designed and built several properties in the 'Metroland' area for Liberty, including Pipers (built 1913) at The Lee, with which Richmond House shares some stylistic similarity, noteably roof line, eaves and windows.

Group Value

Part of the original Liberty Grimms Hill estate

Historic Interest

The group of Arts and Craft properties on the estate nicely illustrate the Liberty vision and design concepts. One of the original properties on Arthur Lasenby Liberty's Grimms Hill private estate of low density 'Metroland' housing, built in the early 20th century to exploit the convenience of the Metropolitan Railway (arrived 1892).
