Statement of Significance
Asset type
Purpose built Lodge Cottage, to serve neighbouring Country House.Age
Circa 1908.Rarity
Adjoining house is Grade II listed & is only original Lodge to this.Architectural and Artistic Interest
Certainly of interest, although has been significantly altered/ extended/ rebuilt over the years - some elements of this more sympathetic than others. The original cottage was set to one side of a courtyard with outbuilding to the opposing side, also original. At some point, this has been filled in very sympathetically. More recently, the lodge has been subjected to further enlargement & customisation in a style at odds with the original design. A combination of unnecessary & mismatched additions/ changes undermine the cohesion of the whole. Brick built, rendered & painted, under a tiled roof. Tiles/ render/windows all replacement.Group Value
With adjacent Rignalls (Grade II) & set with part of the garden of Rignalls (see separate listing by Bucks. Gardens Trust).Historic Interest
Contemporary to the Grade II listed Country House, now in separate ownership, which was built around 1908 by architects Adams & Holden with a garden by Gertrude Jekyll for Dr. Sir Felix Semon, who was eminent physician of his day as a retirement home. Prior to that he had been doctor to royalty, amongst other significant patients.Landmark Status
Low, but visible from the road which then becomes a Public Footpath, by virtue of being near the end of the drive.Date Listed
