Description
Roughwood Croft was built in 1897 (it is dated on the front gable) and it expresses its late-Victorian construction nicely in the 'Queen Anne' style elevations. There are some strong features, namely the entrance porch with splayed buttresses and gauged brickwork under a semi-circular gable with scrolled plasterwork, a Dutch style parapet gable, and the angular corner bay window under its own hipped roof. The rear has two bold gables with bargeboards, and tall chimneys contribute to the pleasing and asymmetrical massing. The materials are also typical of the style, with the first floors dressed with hung tiles and small pane casement windows throughout.
There have been several changes in the later-C20, notably the addition of a greenhouse to the rear, a stone colonnade to screen the recently added swimming pool, and the conversion of theservice ranges to studio use with the requisite unusually large additions to the rear of these to accommodate air conditioning services.
Inside, there are seemingly few original fittings of note. Much of the panelling and fireplaces appear to be late-C20 replacements, and the stair is original but not striking; furthermore, the opening up of a first floor bedroom to serve as a first floor hall required inserting a stretch of first floor balustrade. A 'Chinese Chippendale' style fitted cupboard in the dining room hints at the original fittings that were likely of some quality, but there is little else of architectural note inside where thorough modernisation has taken place.
