Ridge House Quill Hall Lane Amersham Buckinghamshire HP6 6LU

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

Attractive Edwardian house commissioned by a couple after marrying, exhibiting influence of the ‘Arts & Crafts’ style in the design. Still set in a comfortably sized garden, this was originally much larger & still predominantly surrounded by open countryside when built. Fields remain on one side, but all others having been developed since then. As such, whilst there is a range of age to the houses around, Ridge House is one the earliest on the North-Eastern edge of Amersham. A building of Local Note in Amersham.

Statement of Significance

Asset type

Single, detached house.

Age

Circa 1910.

Rarity

Good example of an individually designed & executed commission, of this this type of house in the Edwardian period, for the area. Many were constructed on newly developing estates, whereas the ‘stand alone’ house tended to be more siginaficant/ larger homes.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Neat Edwardian villa exhibiting influence of the ‘Arts & Crafts’ style. Principally over 2 floors, brick-built then roughcast & painted, under a pitched roof of clay tiles. Lovely original over-sized porch remains, as does part-glazed original front door (wooden & painted). Original windows also retained, which are wooden casement windows set into wooden frames, with panels subdivided for multiple panes of glass of smaller proportions, all painted white. Decorative overhang to roof, with original cast-iron metalwork - painted black - to support guttering. Part of right-hand chimney remains, as far as roofline. The original catslide roof is still in situ and adds to the charm

Group Value

Garden adjoins that of Chiltern Cottage, see separate nomination & there are also one or 2 other attractive early C20th cottages located not far away.

Historic Interest

Built for Edward & Mona (nee Richardson) Voss. Mona was an amateur artist & also the sister of Caroline Richardson, who was a more prolific & serious artist in the locality. Numerous paintings, typically watercolours, of Car Richardson - as she was known - exist & have provided an important record of Amersham & district in the earlier decades of the C20th.
