Architectural and Artistic Interest

Attractive house, designed by local architect John Harold Kennard. The proposed drawing for Woodmuir, was published in The Studio Year-Book of Decirative Arts in 1915. This seems to have been the last design he published, prior to active service during WW1. Floor plan takes for of a sideways ‘T’. Over 2 floors, with first-floor set slightly into roof slope for decorative effect. Constructed of clay bricks, using 2 different shades of red, one for the principal elevations & a slightly more orange for highlighting features - such as around windows. Roof of clay tiles, pitched & gabled, which are original. The drawing just shows the large chimney to the front, however there is another significant original chimney visible to the side & a third of smaller proportions visible nearer the rear of the building. Windows are predominantly wooden casement ones painted white, set into white painted wooden frames, with the glazing divided into small panes - all appear original. There are a small number of little windows, namely in the inglenook fireplace & by the front door, which are also original, but are of leaded-light type. Gable to left of facade, with bay window at ground-floor level. Originally with flat roof, this now has a pitched & hipped roof of the early 2000’s. Lovely curvature to top of first-floor window. Front door set to right of gable, original porch appears to have been infilled utilising the same door & flanking windows with a simple flat-roofed porch added externally. Low level stair window, set immediately over. Large inglenook fireplace set to right of this, being quite at ground-floor level with artisan design to the chimney as a whole. More recent single garage added to right, with side of 2-storey bay window visible to the right of the facade.
